| My ferret Ali is 6yrs old.For the last couple weeks I notice changes in her behavior(loss of appetite, loss of energy, weight loss) and she can't support her lower body.At the vet they did radiographs but they couldn't see anything,so they did a blood work and found out that she is anemic and that the kidney levels are really high.Based on this they diagnosed her with lymphosarcoma. Is it enough to diagnose this kind of cancer.I heard about a exam called sonogram.Does anybody knows about it? They already said that she is to weak for a surgery and prescribed her with cortisone just to give her a better life...i don't know what to do.I'm afraid that the diagnose is not correct or that maybe that I can have an alternative treatment for her.

Lymphosarcoma is a cancer. It affects the lymph glands in the body and the only way to tell it's ugly presence is a blood test. We fear that is what took Ben away from us at the young age of 4. Back in August he had a swayed back and could not use his back legs and just wasn't himself. X-rays showed no back injury, and the 2nd opinion was either injury or nerve damage. He soon got some better, but no movement with the hind legs. 18 Dec Ben stopped eating and lost interest in everything. I was feeding and giving him water until his vet appointment on the 22 Dec, Ben passed on the 27 of Dec. We did research on Lymphosarcoma and found out it can be hard to diagnoised. A couple of sites stated that chemotherapy can help prolong the life of the ferret from 6 months to several years depending on early detection of the disease. As we really do not know what took Ben away as he did not have the blood test, we are detemined that the others if they show any of the signs that Ben had, we are going to ask for that blood test first. I hope this helps you. I will look for some links that may have more information on this and post it later.

| Took a bit, but I wanted to make sure the links worked prior to posting. Some have graphic photos of ferrets but I do believe the site warns you of that. So here are the links that I found on lymphosarcoma http://www.ferretcentral.org/faq/med/lymph.html http://www.2ndchance.info/lymphomaferret.htm http://www.all_about_ferrets.com/lymphosarcoma_in_ferrets.html http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?articleid=555 http://www.trifl.org/medical.html http://www.ferretnews.org/lymphosarcoma.html http://www.ferret_universe.com/health/lympho.asp http://exoticandbirdclinic.com/Lymphosarcoma%20in%20Ferrets.pdf http://home.comcast.net/~mustalayday/cancr.htm http://www.einet.net/directory/32194/Lymphosarcoma.htm I hope they will be of some help

| I lost my beloved Josie to sudden onset juvenile lymphosarcoma. Something I was oblivious to until I watched the life evaporate from her. Now, with another deaf ferret I can't help but wonder if there is a link between the two issues and am admittedly concerned for Crystal. Josie's symptoms were that she became lethargic overnight, quit eating and drinking and any effort exerted to go potty or walk , she would move about three steps and then go flat. My other two recently adopted ferrets had just suffered through a digestive upset from eating a bad prekilled frozen mouse and I wondered if Josie was getting a similar problem. Those two had severe diarhhea and the vet prescribed pepto bismol, pedialyte, A/D food, and an antibiotic. An experienced ferret rescuer friend came over and we got some sub cutaneous fluids into Josie, she seemed to perk slightly from that, but only briefly. By now she was not able to stand, there was no color to her nose, breathing was visibly labored for her and she would sometimes whimper. Two more trips to the vet in the next couple days and X-Rays showed her lungs were clear, but her body cavities were filling with the fluids, pressing around her lungs and heart making those organs almost impossible to work. A needle tap of her cavity showed the fluid to be mostly bloody, not clear. If it was clear, the vet said she'd have a decent chance of recovery with intensive care, but if the fluid was bloody, it indicated the cellular walls were literally deteriorating and she would eventually die from internal bleeding. So I sent her on her way. The vet said she likely had this from birth and it was possible that if her system was trying to fight another infection, the cancer was able to take over. The research I've read reiterates that the juvenile form of this is extremely sudden and death is the result. I just wish I knew more about her original breeder so I could warn them and maybe encourage them to NOT breed that particular line. Hope your research helps and your ferret pulls through. Kim

| HI Ferretgang! Thanks for the condolences. Yes, I miss my Josie girl. Sorry to hear your crew is still under the weather. That ECE is a horrible disease! I can't imagine having to deal with it like you've had to. I've read that Flagyl is disgusting and nearly impossible to get into the ferret. Smart move on your part to eliminate any new introductions. Thankfully I haven't had that problem and ferret math clobbered me! I may have posted about it here too. If not, I'll start a thread so as to not hijack this one! Guess the majority of the older posters have gone on to other places. Catch ya later! Kim

| Josiesmom, i'm so sorry to hear about Josie. I totally know how you feel. Last night I lost my Brute to Lymphoma. Everything you described is exactly what we went through. He was only 1 yr old and it all happened within 2 days. We noticed Monday night that he wasn't using his back legs, he would barely walk and when he would try he would take a couple steps and then just flop down. He had this look in his face like the life was being sucked out of him. I posted my story in the Pet Loss thread here. I haven't been here much due to pc issues and just life itself but i'm up and running and wanted to come visit again, especially since I lost my Brute last night. Fortunately even though we opted to have him put down, he died on his own. I would rather have him take his last breath naturally then knowing it was because of a choice we made. Now a decision has to be made. We got him and his sister at the same time. As a matter of fact, Valentine's Day will be a yr since we adopted them. His sister Bella, is in perfect health, very bouncey and playful. The question remains, because she is so young, do we go and adopt another fuzzy so she has a playmate? I don't want it to seem as though we are replacing brute, as he can never be replaced but I don't want Bella to fall into that lonely depressed stage as i've seen many animals do when they lose their buddy. Even though we have the cat, it doesn't compare to having anothe fuzzy to sleep with in the cage ya know. I just don't know what to do. Fortunately she gets along with our cat and dog but she didn't want to sleep last night as she spent most of the time looking in and out of the cage, hammocks and cube for her brother to cuddle with and sleep with. Can you offer any helpful advice. Thanks bunches!
