I was reading down the list of posts, but I didn't see any that matched this. I have several deaf ferrets. Yes, several—6 to be exact. And yes I do know when they are deaf. I’ve raised over 30 ferrets; I’ve just never had so many deaf ones at one time.

I have trained other ferrets to use the potty before with great success, but these have been a disaster.

Once I get them out to train, one-by-one of course, I put them in the box and out they jump, grab them and put them back in. Out they bounce. I can't tell them to "use the potty" like I did with my others. I can't correct them with a stern no if they leave. What do I do? Oh and yes I have several, who squat and drop where they are at, little fellows also.

All of these are ferrets are rescued. In the cage I have a few that just will not use the litter box. I have a little box for each amount of ferrets I have and two are the gigantic size ones.

And no my trained ferrets, before they passed, were not able to help me train these little guys, I did try. I just don’t know what to do.

I had a deaf one before and he was well trained, but he was always looking at my face for cues. He’d check me out to see if I would be letting them out, he turn himself onto his back on the shelf just to watch me and I’d use some type of sign language of type and communicate with him, but again he paid full attention to me. These little girls and guy are just so flighty.

Any help would greatly be appreciated. I just feel so ill equipped right now. Usually people come to me for help.

I've been keeping Costco in business buying their wipes and they have been helping me keep my sanity. Thank goodness most of their play area is vinyl.

Hello,

Well I have the exact same problem... I have 2 ferrets that are deaf. They just go everywhere, I can't imagine 6. I have just about given up on the litter box with these 2, somehow the litter box becomes a play toy about who can dump it and hide under it first. Right now mine just go in their cages on newspaper, I wait until they go before they come out. I just find it easier to roll up the newspaper, clean it and put new paper in. However I still end up cleaning the floor with wipes and spray too. I wish I could help, maybe someone will have tips.

Good luck,
Ashley

I have 3 deaf ferrets and have to keep dropping the into the litter box, then giving big hugs when the job is done. I guess after a while the may get the hang of it. But if they are not used to using a litter box, you may want to get some puppy pee pads for them to use and see how they like that, or newspaper. Some won't use the box if it doesn't meet what the ferret thinks should be it's standard. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the advice, but I see you are in the same boat as me. My husband finally purchased the Ferret Nation Cage. Each shelf is one big bin. Works better, but we still have the ones that will even go in an open bed.
My husband and I have decided that we are going to put tile in most of the house and Bellawood in the rest, because having to clean the carpet all the time is crazy. I have tried the wee-wee pads and they just like to lay "in" them and not go on them. They go under the cotton layer and pull all the padding out. What a mess. So far most of it is on the linoleum floors, in front of the doors, but it is the ones that just stop and plop and someone walks onto. I look where I walk and most others do, but there are some who always get them, my husband mostly and we have had ferrets for years, but he knows to look out for the doors and forgets the drop and dump areas. He is always shampooing the carpet and has had it. I say all carpet goes and tile the whole bottom of the house. He says no, not the whole bottom. So I say, Bellawood, has a 50 year guarantee and I hope that means pet mistakes included. And tile the bathroom and kitchen on the bottom. That won't happen until summer.
I have tried to wait until they all go before I let them out. But that seems to take forever and with 9 ferrets that means only 3 or 4 will do their business and the rest just sit there forever, because they have no idea why I'm making them wait. The potty trained ones know what I'm saying to them. "Go to the Potty!" The others well it's a hit or miss.
Anyone know Ferret Sign Language!!!
Thanks
