Gerbil tips

I may be getting a gerbil soon, and would like to know if anyone had some tips on caring for them? I am first of all not sure how badly they need the company of other gerbils, and I also wonder if it's a bad idea to buy them at a pet shop. (how old are they anyways?)

I just bought 2 new chinchillas for my kids.i bought a 3 level ferret/critter cage.I made sure we got the right food,treats,lava chew stones,dust bath,soft bedding.We also were told to get a wheel for them to be able to run.Yet, I read on here it could hurt there little backs? Also, I was told to get them a hiding house,like 3inch round PVC pipe,cut in 10inch sections. I ordered a 300 pg.book about taking care of chinchillas.But, It will not arrive til the 31st .I don't want to wait that long to make sure they are comfortable,an have all they need..I will take any kind of comments or suggestions any-one that knows how to care for a chinchilla may have.Thanks so much.

I'm Ginni, a 20 yr old first time rat owner who's over the past 2 months acquired a total of 3 rattie bois. I got two back in early august, Ash and Char. They're each between 3 and 4 months old now, full names Ashke and Kechara, but known to everyone by their nicknames. Just two weeks ago I brought home Amberdrake, better known as Drake, who is 3 months-ish give or take a week or two. All three are hooded fancies, Ash being fawn colored, Char being black, and Drake being brown/agouti.

Their ages aren't known for sure, having come from places who weren't sure themselves.

I found a sign at the pet store for a guinea pig that needed a new home. I brought it home and a week later it gave birth to two babies. I put the babies up for adoption and they have good homes. But imagine the surprise when I found 3 pigs instead of one. I named her linnie

My first bunny! (an introduction)

My boyfriend and I got an apartment, and one of the first things we had discussed were pets, since our apartment "technically" didn't allow pets (although many tenants have cats and a few dogs) we figured we might be able to have some sort of small animal. We were trying to decide between a rat and a bunny, so we went all around to the pet stores.
We tried a few feed stores that usually carried them but since the bunnies hadn't been selling well they stopped. Petco and Petsmart had the same outcome. Finally we went to a local pet store that had two full grown rabbits. Two problems; a) I wanted a baby since it was my first rabbit, so I wanted one I would be able to handle. and b) they wanted waaay too much for them. We were about to settle for a rat when I thought to try one last feed/country store, and they had babies for a very cheap price. When we got there my boyfriend picked up a TINY little black fuzzball and said 'this is the one'.

Right after getting her I read everything I could about rabbits. Took her to the vet where she was originally thought to be a boy but that was cleared up later on at another appointment. Now she has more toys than she cares to play with and just about everything a house bunny could ask for!

I'll definitely have more bunnies in the future. They're so adorable and fun! My bf had several before we met and he still really misses his last one, Nola. He loved that bunny more than anything and he took it pretty hard when she passed. Zuul looks so much like his old bunny that he's almost called her Nola, and sometimes he gets upset because he wishes she could be here where he knows she would have been happier. We kinda like to think she IS back in a way.

Is it better for ferrets to eat ferrets food out of organic food or feed your ferret kibble?

Hello everyone! My name is Stacey and I am 20 years old from St. Louis, MO. I am an owner of many different types of pets. I currently own two cats, 17 gerbils, two bettas, two corydora catfish, one african dwarf frog and two snails. I am a Pet Care Specialist at my local PetSmart and I have owned small animals for over 10 years. I have owned hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, guinea pigs, a chinchilla, hermit crabs, etc.

Two cats - Marilyn, 3 years old lives with me, indoor/outdoor cat, sweet yet independent and Whiskers, 8 years old, lives with my parents, extremely shy tabby cat.

17 gerbils - I have NEVER bred gerbils in my life. I rescue and rehabilitate. Problem is, I have never rehomed the gerbils that I have rescued, hence 17. With work and the rest of my daily activities, I still have plenty of time to give each gerbil the care that they need. Their names are Molly, Rosa, Lily, Lucy, Didi, Marie, Kramer, Willie, Waylon, Johnny, Kris, Bart, Ziggy, Sebastian, Dweezil, Samson and Peter. I will post photos sometime of them.

Fish - My two bettas are housed separate of course, one, Batman with a snail and the other, Linus housed with two corydoras, a snail and an african dwarf frog. I love these guys.

I joined this site after reading the proposed bill for the HR669 Nonnative species ban...thought that was ridiculous so I got my voice out and then joined!

I am so excited to find this community to talk and share about small animals! I have been a Veterinary Technician for 20+ years but have never had the priviledge of working for an "exotic" vet and my friends do not understand how wonderful little critters are.Since acquiring my rabbit addiction I have been to vet. seminars and taken university classes to try to understand more about rabbit structure and biology. However, nothing replaces talking between other "lovers of little creatures" to really learn about a species.

6 years ago, I fell in love with a little chocolate Holland Lop that I named Tucker and that was the beginning of our little family. Next came Snickers, his little sweetheart, a tort Holland doe. In addition there is now Socrates, a Lionhead and Benjamin a Mini Lop. Rabbits are such sweet peaceful creatures that I cannot imagine life without them now. Completing our family is Jasmine, a 9 year old, rabbit friendly, Old English Sheepdog.

I look forward to talking with everybody and sharing ideas!

January 1/2009 at 3:00 i learned over a phone call from rabecca the person who bought our house 2 years ago had called the hospital because there tennant and my best friend since i was 4 years old, Collin had lung cancer, pnimonia and had dislocated his hip, he had been sent to the langley hospital minutes before rabecca called us. me and my father, Drew immediatly got in the car and left for a five hour drive from kelowna to langley B.C. 4 hours later we got another phone call from rabecca who said he didnt make it. i never even got a chance to say goodbye, but i went to the hospital anyway's to pay my respects. the next day on my way back home we receved another phone call from petfare, a little pet store who had currently had custody of collin's pets. 2 of which i had hand raised since birth, Sammy, a 1 year old, male, silkie tortishell guniea pig, and Teddy a 3 year old, male, Hetero Beige Chinchilla. i immediatly headed or the petfare and picked up the 2 animals whom i had been very attached to when i lived with them. loading the small but space consuming cage into the truck was another question. we had to fit them in the cab but after an hour of prepairing and loading, we had slowly but surley prepaired the cage and my 2 friends for a long and uncomfortable ride back home. today Sammy and Teddy are safley home and helping me overcome my grief, Sam has basically been my guardian angel ever since he got here, and fully gaining his trust will take time, but i think we have already started. Teddy on the other hand is sensitive and will take much longer than i expected to obtain his friendship again. but never the less i am pleased that they are safe and healthy. unfortunatly i obtained them due to Collin's death, not because i had bought them from him, i always did love Sammy and Teddy, and i always will ... i only wish i could have receved them in a better way.

Kiiji is a Chinese hamster i got as a birthday present in April, from my parents. they got him from Petcetra and also bought me a cage. no real amazing story, but he has a realy interesting personality, considering his breed.

Hello! Name's Cain, and as of now I don't actually own a small critter. I use to have a cat, for 10 years actually, till it died almost a year ago. I started looking around at some new ideas for pets and thanks to my roommate, I'm wanting to get a ferret.

I'm gonna hold off on getting one, cause as of now, I'm in the process of moving :/ And putting any animal in that situation would be torture.

I hope to meet some new friends and even learn a thing or two about ferrets before I get mine :3

I have Russian Campbell Dwarf Hamster, named Gimbly. He is one year old, and I have had him for almost all of that time. His coloring is agouti. I've been training him everyday, but still he bites all the time. He's very scared of the world around him, and so he bites. I love him so much though, he's cute, and (most of the time) after he's out of his cage, quite sweet. Gimbly is very entertaining when I let him down on the floor of my room. He knows exactly where the worst spots are for him to go, and goes there.
I have to clip Gimbly's nails regularly, so that they don't get suck on the cage bars, bedding, or clothing (though the experience is not a pleasant one, I'm glad thought to use a glove) and the last time, I noticed something. On his front, right paw, his nails and longer, and 2 or 3 times as tick as all the other paws. I don't know what he's up to, but I don't intend to let those nails grow long enough to find out!

I was told about this site from a friend, and am so glad that I've come here, it's just awesome. I love have so many people who have and know about small fuzzy animals, and that people are so friendly here.

My name is Beth[any], I recently became involved with small pets. We had a rat that we, unfortunately had to get rid of due to his illness and now we're the new owners of a Campbell's Dwarf Hamster and a Winter White, both females. We are looking into getting a new rat soon, if we can find two females [most pet stores in our area only carry males and we've got no local breeders].

I stumbled across the information for this website in a Critters USA magazine, which I had never heard of until I saw it in a book store. This is a wonderful site and I've learned a lot so far on only my first day here.

I recently bought Lillie on Jan 2, 2009. She's probably the sweetest rat I've ever seen. I find it strange that I finally own a rat. I used to be scared of their tails , until this year when I worked as a animal care taker handling many many rats and other small animals.
