When a female gives birth to a kit, she can't have a bath for 8 weeks and if you have other Chins in the cage with mom, they shouldn't bathe either.

RE: Dust Baths

So far I only give my chinchilla a dust bath three or four times a week. His fur always looks clean and healthy. His outside cage play area is always clean so he doesn't really get that dirty. So it works for him.

RE: Dust Baths

These SmallAnimalChannel articles have some good chinchilla fur and grooming information:

Chinchilla Fur Facts
http://www.smallanimalchannel.com/chinchillas/chinchilla-health/chinchilla-fur-facts.aspx

Good Chinchilla Grooming Tips
http://www.smallanimalchannel.com/chinchillas/chinchilla-health/good-chinchilla-grooming-tips.aspx

Chinchilla Grooming Questions
http://www.smallanimalchannel.com/chinchillas/chinchilla-health/chinchilla-questions.aspx
RE: Dust Baths

I keep a dust bowl available 24-7. Specifically if you have more than 1 chin in a cage. Frequent cleaning of it is neccessary though. I will also occasionally brush my chins or gently pull out mats if they have any that are too tough to untangle. Twice I have given one particular chin a water bath. (after getting into things she shouldn't have) As long as it is done carefully and you take the time to correctly dry your chin, this can help clean up a dirty chin. (She ran into some dipping sauces from a fast food place and once got under the stove and came out covered in grease. No dust bath would have done the job needed!!) She didn't hate the bath or the blow drying. Again, using low air and taking alot of time to finish the job. Afterwards she was so fluffy and took a dust bath. This made her the softest she's ever been!

RE: Dust Baths

You'r supposed to put fresh dust bath in a couple times a day so they can bathe, or if you want you can leave it in there for the day, but make sure it stays clean.

Dust Baths

How often do you offer your chinchilla a dust bath?
