ummm... this might be a stupid question... but is it bad if a hamster fell 2 feet to the floor, landed on its back, and lay still for a minute then was twitching like it was dying, but then got up and started running around?

I was thinking of getting a play pen for my hamster. It said it was ok for rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, and other non-jumping critters. Most said it was perfect for two gerbils. I thought that if it was ok for a gerbil, it was ok for a hamster. After all, weren't hamsters bigger than gerbils? But now I am not so sure. Which is bigger?

Bigger cage?

I adopted my hamster from an animal shelter. He came with a cage, apparantly the one that he has always lived in. I was thinking of getting him a new, bigger cage. I might not have room and I don't know the best kind. What do you suggest?

I have two Roborovskiis named Harry and Simon. And these are some hamsters that I have had before: a Golden named Hammy, a Satin/Teddy Bear/Long Haired mix named Panda, a Russian named Stripe, an Albino named Marshmallow, and two Russians that the pet store said were both males, but turned out to be a male and female, and they bred, but I forgot their names.

I had to return Patches to the pet shop yesterday, I think he had a parasite. I got a black bear hamster. Her name is Shadow because she's all black with a white stripe on her stomach and blue eyes. My mom is scared of Shadow because when she was in the cardboard box on the way home from the pet shop, she was screaming, growling, and shredding the box. When I opened the box to see what Shadow was doing, my mom said "Don't! It'll jump at my throat!" lol hamsters aren't vampires they're just nocturnal.

Hi everyone, I just got a new hamster an I need a name for her, would like some ideas. It is a long haired female syrian she is three months old. she is white, with a pail tan color an three dark patches of fur , one on her head an the other two on each side of her face. she is very sweet an friendly. I would love your idea for a good name for her.

Hamster foot help, please!!

My hamster, Pebbles, has a swollen like foot, and we think it may have gotten caught in her wire wheel. We put Neosporin on it and bought her a new plastic wheel. I don't know if it really did get caught though, does anyone know what this could be?
It has been swollen for about two weeks.
I tried to take a picture of it, but she wouldn't hold still =]
I want to take her to the vet, but my parents won't let me since hamsters don't live for very long.
She is an albino, which I'm thinking is a mutation, could that have anything to do with it?

Making homemade hamster treats: Hamsters are omnivorous, which means.blah blah....Their natural foods include grains, seeds, vegetables, and insects, and they will like corn, oats, or wheat mixed with dry dog food. Premixed hamster food from a pet store has complete nutrition, but some hamsters won't eat it.

Their favorite foods are foods native to their dry habitat, like seeds. For protein and variety they will eat some small insects. They like vegetables, but be moderate in how much you feed them. The key word...blah blah... HERE WE GO! FINALLY! Hamster Treats Recipe

Please note some hamster owners find that peanut butter can cause hamsters to choke. Never feed them buttercups, chocolate, garlic, onions, rabbit mix, raw kidney beans, sweets, toffee

1/4 teaspoon of peanut butter

1 box of plain cheerios cereal. PLAIN

vegetables such as carrots, celery, box choy

a small dog biscuit or stale OR fresh bread.

bird seeds and/or sunflower seeds

tiny amount of cheese

Spread peanut butter onto dog biscuit or bread. Stick cereal on top and press in some of your hamster's favorite small foods like bird seeds, or sunflower seeds. Next press in vegetables around the cherrios. Press cheese around the veggies to cover. Have fun hiding the treat where your hamster has to climb to get it.

Banana Hamster treat

1/4 of banana

1 teaspoon honey

1 tablespoon raisins

small squirt of lemon juice

Mash up banana and add a small squirt of lemon juice so the banana will stay fresh. Add honey and raisins then stir together. Serve in a small bowl sperate from the hamster food mix.

Hamster dream dinner

1/2 cup peanut butter

1/4 cup of oats

1/4 cup of sunflower seeds

mix them together and serve to your hamster

This is a big one

1 cup powdered milk

1 cup wheat germ

1/2 rolled oat or porridge oats

1 jar berry baby food

1 white egg

water enough to moisten the milk

Directions

Avoid baby food that contains leeks, onions, chives, spices, garlics, or lemon juice.

Measure out dry ingrediants into a bowl and whisk together. Add the baby food and about half jar of water-if you're mixing by hand, rub and press down the mixture with back of your spoon while mixing. This makes a very thick and solid dough mixture, but it will still be sticky. Roll the mixture into tiny little balls, about 1/2 inch or so wide and flatten them slightly. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake at 375 degrees F (175 C). These don't take long to bake because they are so small--only bake them until they turn light brown around the outer edges; about 8 minutes in my oven, to give you an idea of the lenght of time. Cool, then store in an airtight container or in the freezer.

Hamster Ladder/Bathroom

I just added some new things to my hamster's cage. One, a ladder and platform. She lives in an aquarium, so I made the platform out of cardboard. My problem is that she doesn't know how to use the ladder. I put her up on the platform, and she can't figure out how to get down, so she just falls (the platform is not very far off the ground =]). She's blind, so that contributes to the problem.
The other thing I added is a small jar for her bathroom. I thought she might like it since hamsters are clean animals, and she would appreciate a cleaner environment. I put some hammy leftovers in it to encourage her to use it for what it's there for, but all she does is go in and burrow in it! It's so cute and not that big of a deal, but I would like her to be happier. Any ideas?

My lil hamster doesn't like us holding it with our fingers around it.He will try to bite and i don't know what to do cuz i'm a dog expert, not a hamster expert!!! He's only bit me once and i started pushing him around cuz i was mad.

Please help cuz he's only 6 months old and i want him to be a good hamster!

Here is my girl, Bella! She is my very first hamster. She is a long haired golden syrian, and possibly a satin. I am not sure how old she is because she was abandoned at the pet store I work for. But she is an absolute sweat heart! <3

Toys and Playtime

My hamster, Marshmallow, has a ton of toys. Everyone always asks me if I've left any toys at the store for anyone else. She's got so much stuff because she inherited them from her Mouse brothers. Her favorite thing in the world is her exercise wheel. She runs on that thing a million miles an hour, all night. But she loves toilet paper tubes and paper towel tubes as well. She rips the leftover paper off them and hides inside. I think she uses the inside as a potty actually. They never smell too good. She enjoys anything she can hide in. She's not really a good climber yet, but she is starting to be interested in climbing the bars on the cage. She also has an egg carton she enjoys jumping in and out of, and also hiding underneath it. I bought her a potty, which she doesn't like, so I emptied it, and gave it back to her and now she likes to sleep in it.

Travel by car

In late September 2008 we traveled by pickup from the pacific coast to the Atlantic coast. It was about 3,000 miles in total. We passed through deserts, mountains, plains and rolling hills. Since Blossom passed away in July, we only had the two RoboPuffs traveling with us, Bubbles aand Buttercup. At home they each have their own 10 gallon aquarium. For this trip it would be too much space for them each to have their own. We cut a rectangle of 1/8" acrylic sheet so it would divide the tank diagonally across, and create a wall from top to bottom. Each triangular side had its own food, water, bedding and wheel. This worked great and they even had fun 'being together' able to see one another. They rode on the back seat, propped by a blanked to level the tank. It was a five day trip in total with four overnights. Each night we took them into the motel and let them have a 'normal' evening to themselves. During the day they seemed to sleep right through most of it. If we stopped places we made certain to have shady spots and crack the windows. The temperature never got high at all, and they never seemed stressed a bit.

Overall, they seemd to barely notice the trip and did great. They are now both back in their own full sized quarters and happy little RoboPuffs— as always!

Hamster care and cage cleaning

Hi, I was wondering how often other people clean out their hamster cages and their nest boxes in particular. I try to clean out the whole cage once a week, but I notice her main sleep area also doubles as a major bathroom area. I want to clean this out more than once a week but I've read so often that you shouldn't disturb their sleeping area too much. This is also the spot where she hoards her food, so I'm hesitant to empty this area out too often, but I want it to be clean too. Can I sneakily toss the bedding, food and poop, and then replace some food in there or let her completely start over on her own? She has 3 other sleeping areas that she uses quite often, but this one seems to be her favorite, so I don't think she is feeling confined to do everything in this spot. She just seems to like it that way. Please let me know your throughts and what you do. Thanks!
