Hey guys, I'm new here (joined today), but I've owned rodents all my life, and then this little guy came along. We just got him today, so I'm here to introduce my newest little mystery rodent. He's not named yet (suggestions welcomed!), and we just don't know what he is. The pet store had him labeled as a dwarf hamster, and he does have the coloring of a Siberian, but he in no way has the typical body shape. He has a dorsal stripe, and a tail that is shorter than a mouse's, but longer than I've ever seen on a dwarf hamster. He also has a much longer, sleeker body with fur like a mouse's. He also has, ahem, the rather large testicles of a mouse, which I've also never seen in a hamster. Is it possible he's an oddly colored mouse? He had a brother that also looks just like him. I took him to another pet store and asked what they thought, and they told me roborovski, but that doesn't seem right either. Here are some pictures to help (sorry for the bad quality, my camera is missing so I had to take them with my phone):
Here's a frontal (and cute) view of his face:

His back, with dorsal stripe:

Side picture:

And his odd tail:

Can anyone tell me what I have here? Is he really a robo hamster?

Welcome to the board, Shayna. I was just looking at the picture of your new animal, and I'm not quite sure what it is. A possibility might be a short-tailed possum because of the nose and the color of it. Whatever it is, it is sure cute.

It looks to me like a Chinese Dwarf hamster-although i doubt its a short-tailed possum it may be! I'm highly thinking its a Chinese Dwarf, judging by the tail and snout. Whatever it is, it sure is cute!

Because the pictures are small, it's hard for me to determine what it is.

It is definitely a Chinese hamster . They are mouse like hamsters, and some people can mistake one for a mouse. I have three mice, and there are quite a few reasons why I know it isn't a mouse. I will post some now. 1: It is to large to be a mouse. 2: Mice have much longer tails. 3: The head shape is wrong for a mouse. Try searching 'Chinese hamster' on the internet. I hope this helps you. Chinese hamsters are rare , so congrats on your new friend. As for names... Since you hammy is a boy, I love the name Otis. I like unique names.
