Hi, I have had my wee boy mouse Nutmeg for a while now and he has always been a fairly happy little fella; but he has raw skin on both sides of his nose. He is eating normally, doesn't seem to be dehyrdrated. I do know at one stage he lost weight due to some very strange reason that someone removed his food bowl from his cage and I never discovered what happened to it (Yes, he got another one immediately it was discovered which was a couple of days after i'd cleaned out his cage;this is usually done every 2 days) . He is quite a good weight now and seems to be happy but the raw skin is really botheirng me as it looks sore and I dont' know what to put on it.

I have no idea of his age as i took him on after my son didn't want him anymore and I change his cage around each time i clean it out to avoid boredom for him. I added a cardboard roll and a tissue and he has a little mousey house as well. He didn't like the mousey wheel at all.

Please any ideas of what I can do to rid my little fella of the raw looking skin on the side of his nose. I do handle him and I have a special box toput him in when I clean him out and he has not been with another mousey for along time so don't think it's any infection from anthoer source??

Ok, I know I'm a little late, and I hope your little guy is doing fine now. If he isn't I don't know a lot, but I might be able to help. I would apply a non-stinging NON-TOXIC antibiotic ointment. Keep his cage very clean, every two days is good. remove anything with rough edges from the cage. Make sure he isn't chewing on the bars. Excessive chewing could cause the skin to become raw. If that's the case, you will need to put him in a ten or twenty gal tank or a plastic cage with no bars. Also make sure he is on paper bedding. The best in this situation would be CareFresh Ultra. It's very soft and the best choice for any injured small pet. Be sure his food and water are easy to reach. I hope this helped.

What kind of cage do u have? Most rodents chew on the bars of their cage causing a rub raw on their face. These can get very ugly looking and sometimes it is mistaken for ringworm. There is a chance of it getting infected so keep it clean, though mice regularly groom themselves so you shouldn't have to do much.
