Later this week, I will be picking up two "dumbo" rats that my friend had to give up because hes going to college (yay!) At home, I have two cats that are both over two years old (ones a tabby shorthair and ones a ragdoll). Anyways, I've seen many instances of them living together side by side like a dog and a cat would- is this possible? And if so, is there a specific way I should introduce them? I can always keep them seperate if need be.

I don't think that it's a good idea to put cats and rats together. Even if they grow up together, instinct could take over and cause them to fight one another.

Hi, new member, but reasonably well versed amateur rat keeper. Thought I'd chime in. Any animal is better introduced from a very young age and only with very tractable personalities and only well supervized at all times--similar to the vitalness of supervising toddlers around dogs. Some people do it, and have successfully kept rats and cats together as the best of friends. Many more have tried it and it ended badly for the rat when the cat's instincts came to the fore after a period of acceptance or tolerance. Especially with your cats being as old as they are, and your rats being rehomes, which makes me think that they are at least young adults I wouldn't recommend it for you. Congratulations though on your new critters. Three of my six rats happen to be dumbos too. Goofy little things. They're pretty awesome!

I wouldn't even consider trying it with a larger animal such as a rabbit or guinea pig.

if your rat has ever been outside, it has probably chased and either hurt or killed rats and or mice. It's easy for cats to catch these critters.
I have cats and rats and they don't intermix without a human present. and even then I am holding my pet rat. a quick bite to the back of the rats neck and its game over.
