Hello, I am a new ferret owner, my oldest son (25) felt I didn't have enough to do I guess, lol...anyway, we came home one night and said here mom, I got you a gift and presto, Prince (2yr old male) was thrust into my arms.  I've never had animals n the home, don't care for the smell, their messes, etc...but I am trying to make the best of the situation cuz my son is quite proud of Prince.  Anyway, he came from a prior home who sent word he was potty trained and use a potty pad.  Not being familiar with ferrets I purchased a large nylon dog cage n put him n there with a potty pad, which he used pretty good.  However, when we let him out play n the evenings, he runs to the cornner of the den or the kitchen and poops n pees there.  I do not want my house smelling like a nasty home but how do I RE-potty train him?  Since he goes n the cornner I purchased one of those cornner potty pans but he won't use it, he now goes in front of it or to the side of it.  PLEASE HELP, his actions are making me want to get rid of him n I really want to try to work this out.  Any advice would b greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

TeriC

If he poops outside of the litter box, just scoop the poop and set it inside the box instead of cleaning the area. The poop in the box will let him know that that is his bathroom, not the floor. If it doesn't smell like a bathroom, he might not understand. I also give my ferret a treat whenever he uses the litter box.

ALSO! If there are a couple specific areas where he is pooping, set a couple pieces of newspaper right there and praise him when he goes on those areas. Don't spank or hit the ferret, but do give him verbal warnings and say no when he goes where he shouldn't and give him plenty of "Good boy!"s when he does it right.

I hope this helps and that he can stay with you

I would place the ferret in the poop-pan and say Pee-Pee. If he poops reward with a treat. Also use an enzyme cleaning product safe for pets on the area were a previous mistake was made. All of my ferrets have learned the meaning of Pee-Pee and they back-up to the poop-pan and do their business. You will need more than one pan as ferrets do their business in all corners of a room. You may want to confine your ferret to one ferret proof -room.
