Hi There.....I have had my 2.5yr old guinea pig, Lewis in and out of the vet since 25th January.
He started off with a golf ball size abscess under his jaw, which came up quite suddenly. He has been on antibiotics and I have been cleaning him daily under jaw with salt water, still eating but not large amounts, more fussy....( he has been separated from his brother as to not cross contaminate the other)
The vet can only find out what is going on by putting him under anaesthetic, we are suspecting dental problems. He has just finished his 2nd bout of antibiotics(double strength) which seemed to be working well and still taking probiotics.

Today I have noticed he hasn't fully healed under the jaw. I am so concerned, I don't want him to go on another lot of antibiotics and I don't believe he would survive going under anaesthetic just to check what is going on with xrays and whatever else may need to be done.

Can someone out there please help, I don't know what to do :-( Littlepig

You can always get a second opinion from another vet not associated with the one that you are seeing now. To continue to give it antibiotics over and over has its own risks. I understand your discomfort with anesthesia for such a small animal, but it may be the only solution available.

How is your guinea pig doing? Did the vet give your guinea pig any ointment?

Hi Joshua.....

Sorry for late reply.....Lewis is doing ok thanks...He still has his wound which I bathe in salt water daily. It will not disappear. He is eating well now.
I have been reading a fair amount of material and it seems as though he is at risk either way. If I put him on more antibiotics it will destroy his immune system and if I put him under surgery the prognosis isn't good...especially because of his age. I am pretty sure it is tooth related, I can just make out a bony area on one side of the jaw that is not on the other side. It never fully heals...
SO....every day I am still giving him pro-biotics and his brother too and put them back in the cage together. I had kept them apart due to the bacterial infection he had from abscess would spread....They are better now they are back together. I will see how we go and if need be take him to another vet in the next few weeks for 2nd opinion if need be...

Thanks again for your advice :-)

I hope that your guinea pig overcomes his illness. Keep us updated.

Hello, I am new to this but I have a guinea pig who had an abscess/ tumor on the side of her face right by her eye/ ear. I had cleaned it and cleaned it and she was in a lot of pain the vet had put her on antibiotics as well but it never got better and it smelled awful to clean it and drain it. I got it removed. I knew there was risk and she was about 3 when she had it done, but since then she is as happy as can be! Everything healed up wonderfully! If you know of a vet who is super familiar with pocket pets, definitely something to consider. The surgery was only $50 too! But like you said, it doesn't do him any good staying on antibiotics for a long time!
