Hey everyone, new user to this site(but not to bird channel) and semi new mouse owner.

I had fosterd a mouse for 2 years till he died, but didnt know they could get lice!

i just recently (yesterday) got a new mouse from petsmart,i had got him with a cagemate but the cagemate attacked him without mercy and we had to take him back,we kept the (now) hurt mousie, but hes doing ok,just has a scabbed foot, and a small scab on his tail and ear (poor sniffles!)

anyway i read they could get lice, and this scares me. i have a few questions on it.

1.how do they get it?
2.how do i know if he has it
3.he wouldnt come home with it,right?
4.can he pass it to our cat,or us?

and any info you can give!

thank you!

I am not a vet or expert on health care for animals. I can pass your questions on to a expert if you would like me to?

Hmm... I'm no expert, but I'll try to help. If he has lice he will be very itchy. he may scratch almost constantly. Also you might be able to see louse "dirt" (poop) on him. This looks like tiny grains of black sand. he may get scabs, so be sure all of his scabs are from the fight. I wish I knew more, but this should help. Lice are a very serious thing for mice, and if you think he has them, he should see a vet immediately. mice can die from a louse infestation.

Also, lice can cause hair loss in mice. You could ask an expert or ask a vet who works with mice and other rodents. Hope this helps!
