Monkeypooh I didn't mean to get you worried. Since it's not an application for the vet school.. then it should be ok. I don't quite understand why they needed an essay? Was it about what you'd like to major in? Is that what they asked you? If it's say for general education courses then what you want to major in or what motivates you to major  in vet. medicine should not affect your admission to CSU. If you haven't applied to the vet school yet then it should be fine, it might be even good because through your essay you give them an idea about who you are.. I know it contradicts what I said before, it's just that I think the criteria change when it comes to a certain school/major and when it comes to applying to a college in general. I don't think you'll have any problem to get accepted in CSU. Just when it comes to applying to the vet school.. then be careful if they ask you for an essay...You can prepare from now, since you'll have time (three years like you said) to find sample essays for such schools.. I think there might be samples online..I think I've seen one...darn I can't remember it was.. I think some general department of veterinary medicine.. which was listing all schools, requirements.. or maybe it was explanation of the application to vet school...perhaps if you go to a councelr/advisor once you get in he/she might be able to help you with that (although from my experience advisors don't give a sh...for you and your progress).

So you shouldn't worry girl, Colleges in general look for MONEY MONEY MONEY... and your GPA DEFINITELY HELPS A LOT. It is very unlikely that they WON'T accept you either as a new or transfer student...I'm sorry I was more particular to applying to the vet school not to the college!!! You'll be JUST FINE []

They wanted a personal essay because they wanted a way to get an idea of what each applicant is like. When I apply to vet school my essay will be MUCH different. I see what you are saying about the vet school essay.

This essay for the undergrad application was very casual actually. They had me submit it in within the online application. I had to write into into a box just like I am writing this post into a box right now. Weird huh?

Some bad news though. I found out I don't meet the transfer requirements in math for CSU. These requirements are NON negotiable. The office of admissions said that its because they had sooo many transfers coming in with sucky math skills. Here are the requirements:

http://admissions.colostate.edu/AdmWRBlk.aspx?PgID=156

I have ALWAYS struggled with math. My high school math courses look like this:

Algebra 1:       D

Geometry:      A

Algebra 2:       D

Trigonometry: A

Since I didn't get all C's or above thats out the window.

I got a "D" in my college quanitative reasoning course despite going to tutoring for 2 hours a week (i got the WORST teacher ever) So thats out the window too.

I called the office of admissions and they told me that the only other option for getting into CSU and fulfilling the math requirement would be to take the Math Placement Exam. Its a 50 question 2.5 hour, online test and if you don't do well they toss out your application. I could do the test but I honestly don't think I'll pass. That doesn't mean i wouldn't TRY though, but I did  start to think of other options.

It occured to me to check out the Bel-rae institute, a vet technitian college that gives you an associates degree in vet technology in 18 months. Its located in denver (not my favorite place, but i could always live in a neighboring town and go to school in denver).

I would attend Bel-rae for 18 months, during which time I would take a math course that would be transferable to CSU and be sure to get a c or higher in it. I would graduate with my associates degree in 18 months, get placed in a job in the vet tech field, and then apply to CSU. I would finish my undergraduate degree in Biology at CSU and then I would apply to vet school.

Sure, it will add some extra time to how long it will take me to become a vet but I'm not going anywhere and atleast I'd have a career as a vet tech as a job as opposed to working at target while going through school. That equals MONEY! I'm quickly learning how to take lemons and make lemonaide.

So now I'm seriously considering attending Bel-rae. These are my reasons:

1. I would live in CO while attending Bel-rae and thus would be able to establish residency in CO. So when I went back to my undergraduate degree and applyed to CSU I would get IN STATE TUITION! annnddd when I apply to CSU as a grad school that would give me the ability to ALSO apply for in-state tuition. CHA-CHING!

2. It would look really good on my application to vet school to have an associates degree in vet technology.

3. I would get first hand experience in the field which would allow me to see what I am getting myself into as a vet.

4. Sam and I would be in a much more liveable environment he TOTALLY would be able to sell a TON of cars in Denver (he's a used car salesman and he is REALLY great about what he does because he is so charismatic and he doesn't want to screw people over)

5. Attending Bel-rae for 18 months would be much more inexpensive then attending a 4 year university for the next 18 months.

6. Its a really great school for vet techs that provides you with first hand experience. They stick you right into the operating room to prepare cats for surgery or have you hold a horse while they give injections in addition to having you study in the classroom. It really peaks my interest.

7. I'd learn basic first aid for animals and things such as how to give shots and remove sutures. No more going to the vet and paying tons of money for shots or to get stitches out! And if my fuzzies ever got sick I would be more qualified to keep them stablizied until I could get them to a vet for further examination.

8. If I'm a vet tech I'd be working in a vet's office and would be recieving discounts on vet services. That means that basic adrenal treaments like Lupron for Delilah would be less expensive.

9. Working in a vet's office equals KICK *** letter(s) of reccomendation from the vets I work for! (who more then likely are CSU graduates!!!)

10. I'd start working with animals MUCH sooner then if I waited 7 years to graduate from vet school.

So those are my reasons. I have to talk it over with Sam but my mother thinks its an EXCELLENT idea. It means so much that she's supportive. She never went to college herself but without her I wouldn't have made it to college myself. She helped me find tons of financial aid money as well as a program at my current school for students with learning disabilities, such as myself.

To be honest I was choking back tears on the phone when I was talking to the admissions people at CSU and they told me I didn't meet the requirements. Math has always held me back and it really upsets me. But now it seems that thinks are working out for the better. I think going to Bel-rae is a better choice then attending CSU right away. Heres to everything working out!

Sorry this is so long. You guys are really great people and I love talking to ya'll and your support rocks. I just felt like typing all this out and getting it all of my chest would really help me out. And it did. So i'm glad I took the time to fill you all in on my situation.

Stupid website won't allow me to delete my double post GRRR!!

Monkeypooh that's a great idea!!! I've seen that tech institute on commercials on animal planet lol! I was thinking "darn if only I was in colorado"....Experience at a vet clinic/hospital is not just good for your application to a vet school it's a MUST. I think they require about 200 hours???

You're making the right choice and plus all the advantages you mentioned!!! It's an excellent idea indeed!!!! You need to know though (I didn't and I was really disappointed when I found out) The vet tech courses do not count towards the vet med major! Non of the vet tech courses meet requirements or are transferable to a vet program....which sucks cause you'd think it's totally related and say if you do microbiology in a vet tech program why won't you transfer the credits to your vet program....????

Another thing you  need to find out... only so that you won't waste years.... Are you planning to get a degree in bio and then apply to vet school? I'm asking because prevet program is a MUST.. At least that's what they told me from Uni of Florida...NO matter if I have a bachelor in science (nursing), I would still need the prevet program (4 years had I gone to UCONN). So maybe you should/could get into prevet...OH.. and about that.. what I was told was that you can't simply take the courses that are required for prevet you have to enroll in the prevet program...if I'm correct and did not misunderstand what they told me at that vet school in Florida... Maybe CSU is different but make sure you find out all those silly details. You're still very young but why waste years if you can get it over with faster you know?

As for math.. blaaah.. sometimes it's the teacher's fault...I had tough math instructors and was getting As and B's and had easy going instructors "cool" ppl etc...and I had the hardest time of my life...Lots of peeps have problem with math but.. oh well in worst case you can take it over and over.. and the math placement test in case you haven't taken it before is basic algebra.. and it doesn't sound right about "not doing well=forget about admission"! That's why it's a placement test its purpose is not to flunk you but to place you in the right level of math!! What are they talking about??????[:O]

Anyways.. I'm so excited for you [] It's a drag and it's often frustrating, paperwork applications requirements this and that... but you'll MAKE IT [] Just don't give up []

My plan is to finish this first year of Undergrad here at NAU. Then in the fall go to Bel-rae institute and spend 18 months getting my associates degree in vet technology THEN apply to CSU for undergrad and enter their pre-vet program and major in Biology (work on that for approx 3 years, depending on how many of my credits from NAU transfer to CSU). THEN apply to CSU's vet school and spend ANOTHER four years learning to be a vet.

Yeah. it's ALOT of work. All in all I will be spending close to 9.5 years working on getting into and through vet school (4 years undergraduate, 1.5 years in vet tech training, 4 years vet school) PLUS interships after I graduate. Its gunna take FOREVER but the best things are worth waitng for right?

I dunno who said this quote, but its always inspired me, "If you knew the time it took me to achieve my mastery it wouldn't seem so wonderful" I think it was a famous artist (like michealanglo or somone that said that) but I really think its true. Great things come at a high cost with alot of "blood, sweat, and tears"

I REALLY wanna be a vet so I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make this happen. Even if it means spending YEARS in school and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Speaking of which, if I can tweak my situation just right it looks like I'll be entering graduate school with NO student debt! That would ROCK! Achieving colorado residency AND having lots of scholarships is gunna help for sho!

I really meant every word in that application to CSU. I want to be a vet for all the ferrets out there. I want to honor De's memory. I want to do it for all my future animals. Its gunna take FOREVER to achieve but I believe in myself and I know that in the end it will be totally worth it!

I sent in my adress to the Bel-rae institute so that they can send me some more info on their school. Depending on the cost, I won't be paying A DIME for classes there because of my grants and scholarships (woo hoo!). Hopefully I'll get some info from them in the next few days.

Thank you guys for being super supportive! It means alot to me to be surrounded by family and friends that support me.
