What are some of the tips and tricks everyone uses to get photos of their fuzzies? After a recent attempt I managed to get one smeer off a whole roll of film. Also, how do you get the nature shots without them being on their leashes? They dont run away on you?

I would get ahold of a good quality digital camera for pictures. in the long run theyre cheaper than bringing roll after roll of bad pictures to the film shops. with digital you can just delete the bad ones and start over.

Patience is the #1 key rule to fuzzy photography. you've gotta have time and patience. out of 30 pictures you may only get like 5 good pictures. Its also easier if you have someone to help you. someone to be ready with the camera and someone to make the ferrets pose and such. you've gotta be quick with the camera. one second theyre still and the other theyve run off.

As for the outdoors pictures (at least my own) we keep the ferrets on their harnesses right up untill we try the picture. theres always more than 1 of us there, so theres more than 1 pair of eyes to watch them. we also only bring 1 out at time so its easier to keep track of them. youve also gotta be on your toes a bit more. since youre outside theres no walls or such to stop them from running off before you catch them. when theyre not being shot (with a camera lol) thayre being carried or harnessed.

if you look under the "ferret whisperer" post, theres a picture of Titus out in my backyard fern garden. it took mike 15 shots and me jumping on leaves and sticks for 25mins to get that one good shot..

Hey Comm/wolf,
What's a roll of film???[] But seriously... Digital is the FIRST thing. The first "trick" is to take LOTS of shots. That is where a digital camera is a must. Don't know your $ situation, but you can get a decent 5 megapixel model for about $75, a good one for $125 - $175. The key is 5 mp's. This allows you to "crop" a pic quite a bit w/out losing any clearity/sharpness.
OPTICAL Zoom helps as well. Optical not digital zoom. 3x or 4x optical will help alot.
The reason higher "mp's" and "zoom" help is this... It keeps you AWAY from the "fuzzy"!!!
Getting too close distracts them. *See my "motivational poster" of Izzy titled FORESIGHT,in that post topic by monkeypoohbear. This pic was taken with a REAL zoom lens on my SLR camera from almost 30 ft away, and she STILL busted me taking it!!! Anyway... what I'm saying is, staying a few feet away won't distract them too much and will also help with the auto focus in the camera. AF wont work if your closer than 18 inches or so.
Another important trick is to "know" your ferret. Meaning their habits in play, exploration, rest, etc... This foresight (no pun intended) will help you anticipate a shot. Again, the "FORSIGHT" pic was a shot of Izzy "windowgazing". She does this every morning, so I set up the camera ahead of time. Here is another from a different windowgazing moment.

Sorry if this is TOO much info, but I find these few tricks are the MOST important in order to get good shots. A little "luck" ALWAYS helps as well (right time, right place).
Oh... and did I mention LOTS of pics??? That is the beauty of digital. The DELETE button.
Well good luck. I hope this info is helpful to you (and anyone else interested). Have fun.

Later, Matt

Yups it takes lots of patience and LUCK... so far.. I ain't got much of any lol!

I hear ya, Skunklove.
I DO use the delete and STILL have over 125 pics on my hard drive. About 40 have been printed, and 20 or so framed. Oh yeah can't forget a Christmas card and a Halloween Party Invitation. And that doesn't count the REST of our non-fert pics.  AGAIN... the beauty of digital!!!
Good to hear from you Skunk, hope all is well.

Later, Matt & Kristi (Izzy & Brut)

Ive been wanting a good digital camera for a while now. However, Ive never really found one I like. I dont like the time it takes between when you click the shot and when it actually takes the shot. I guess the band photographer in me is used to instantaneous. It must be hard with that sort of delay and a fuzzy who wont sit still! Thanks for all the hints. []

Commandwolf,

There are digital cameras that do "burst" shots. That means they take a series of succsessive shots with just one press of the button.

Also the delay between button press and actual shot can depend on how you have the zoom and/or focus set up.

Putting the control on action shot helps too.

Get a 2GB data card you'll never run out of room for photo shoots and then you can just delete what doesn't look good!

A decent photo editor can eliminate those leashes if you don't want to risk a free roaming ferret!

I use a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ3 it has 6X optical zoom and is a 5mp photo. This camera also has image stabilizer (eliminates my hand shake) I got it from Circuit City for less than 200 bucks!

The one I used before this was an HP 635 3mp and took decent shots until a donkey trompled it.

Good luck! Have fun!

Josie made me do it! I had to build this just for her! www.vanityferret.com []
