I just lost my little dog a few days ago. She was killed and I was very depressed. I had just decided on getting a ferret when I read they were banned in California. Why is it that they were banned as pets? I'm in Mexico for 2 or 3 months and was planning on taking one back with me, but I guess it's not possible. I wouldn't be able to cross the border without having it confiscated and destroyed. I wouldn't want another little animal to be put to sleep. Is there no hope for me? Do I have to get another dog instead? Please enlighten me with your ferret loving wisdom!

Unfortunately the state of California has a ban on ferrets. they will confiscate the little one and kill it. They lack the knowledge of the domesticated ferret and flat out refuse to be learn any information about the domesticated ferret. The politicians will believe who ever has the highest dollar amount in their pockets to protect their false beliefs. So, the only way you can have a ferret for a pet/companion is to move to a state that is friendly towards the ferret. Sad, but true. That is my opinion. But ferrets are illegal in California.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog.  I know how hard it is to lose a dog or any other pet. As for as your question; Unfortunately I don't know how to answer it correctly.  I do agree with what fuzzie23 said.  California is one difficult state when it comes to ferrets! I don't know what the international laws are on transporting a ferret over international linesa are.  I do know if it's a dog you have to have all vacinations current, plus any other shots that may be required for international travel and have proof of that to transport between international lines. There are additional forms that need to be filled out aswell. As far as ferrets, I'm so sorry that I can't help out more.  My only suggestion is to look into maybe flying into a different state such as Arizona.  Do some research online about flying in there with a ferret.  If you find anything out, let us know so we can help others who may come into the same situation.  http://www.petfriendlytravel.com/?page=intl_travel Here's a link for transporting animals from the US. May have some info on transprorting into. I hope I helped a bit.

I am a Clifornian by heart and birth and will never move back again. The problem is that to many imported animals and plants have been released in California that have overrun the enviroment and Californians are crazy about all that, goodluck on getting through it.

The thing that is so irritating to me regarding the closed minds in California is that while they show unfounded alarm at the unlikely and unproven problem loose ferrets MIGHT cause - they totally ignore the very REAL problem feral cats and dogs have already caused!

Considering that ferrets sold in the US are sterilized - the possibility of self sustaining "colonies" is  non existent. Add to that the fact that the majority of ferrets are raised as kibble fed animals and have not awakened their hunting instincts- it is most likely that any loose ferrets will starve before they set up sustainable colonies.

With the majority of ferrets bred in the US coming from Marshall's and the fact that they are selectively bred for kit behavior - most ferrets go through life oblivious to the things that would harm them - like cats, dogs, birds of prey not to mention vehicles. So it isn't likely that domestic ferrets could or would be able to set up sustainable populations in the U.S.

For those who look to New Zealand and other places as examples of feral ferret populations - what they selectively choose to forget is that those ferrets were DELIBERATELY loosed to control rodent and rabbit populations and the ferrets loosed were INTACT and able to breed!

IF there WAS the possibility that feral populations of ferrets would become an issue, I am certain that IF it were in fact posible there would plenty of instances for proof in many other states - all one has to do is view the "lost ferret" pleas at animal shelters and local community stores!

Furthermore, considering that several new breeds of rat were introduced to this country via our forefather's ships, as well as horses and pigs and how these animals managed to develop large feral populations, ferrets too were brought over on those same ships and used on farms and in homes for rodent control - if there were the chance that loose ferrets could develop self sustaining populations detrimental to natural fauna- it would have happened by now and been well documented- BUT IT HAS NOT !

One more instance that proves politicians are blindly ignorant of what is right in front of them yet they are too drunk on their own power to listen to the public!

I hope California falls off the west coast! []

Cheers! Kim

I love California, just not the people who run it, they are so stupid, I live there for some time and couldnt understand any of their reasoning, my best advice is unless you are rich DON'T MOVE THERE! ok and any other comment I have to make could be considered offensive but yes the need to get their heads on straight when it comes to animal laws and treatment.

I agree that California is a very unfriendly ferret state.  However, why are we just voicing our opinions about how the state operates when it come to ferrets and not helping give advice here.  Isn't this forum about giving advice?!! I thought so and am disappointed to see the facts on the state, not alternatives to get a ferret there.  There are many ferret owners in California and they have vets that treat them, disregarding the laws.  I personally have a two friends with ferrets there. Yes, I agree that it is a stupid law in California and the facts about ferrets as nutered/spayed pets proves it so.  I just think we need to be giving some advice here, not giving our opinion on Californias laws!

Ok, I do know a little bit about ferrets in California. I live in Calif and I own ferrets. I am very careful who I tell I have ferrets. There is an estimated 500,000 + ferrets living in Calif, and there are more ferret vets in Calif than in any other state. It is not illegal for vets to treat ferrets, but most that do are exotic animal vets. You can go to any Petco or Petsmart and buy anything you want for ferrets, you just can't buy them or own them. Did you know the famous ferret calendar put out by Jeanne Carley is out of Calif?

As I said, I am very careful who knows I have ferrets, but I find more and more people in my area alone who have ferrets. I am babysiting my sons friends ferret right now. I travel to Nevada with my guys several times a year. Yes I am nervous, and I am very careful not to go over the speed limit so I won't get picked up. Police officers can take your ferret and destroy it, but most times they transfer the ferret out of state to a ferret shelter in Nevada, Oregon or Arizona. I have a friend, here in Calif, who adopted a ferret to a police officer, go figure. My good friend runs a ferret shelter in Nevada, and I do see ferrets come in from Calif. Since Hildy retired from the CDFA (calif domestic ferret assn), there is no real shelter for the ferrets to go to before they leave the state.

Yes, I agree the politicans are stupid, and for them it's not really important, but someday the law will change and my babies will be free. Part of me doesn't want them to be legal because then we'll get people who buy them on impluse and we'll have to start "offical" shelters, and they will be over run with ferrets. But I would dearly love to not have to hide my babies.

When my husband and I retire, we will be moving out of state because of the ferret laws, gun laws and the outragous tax laws. Calif is a great place to live. It's beautiful, it has oceans and mountains, great weather(usually). I am 30 mins from the ocean, and if I want to ski, it's 3 hours in the opposite direction, I love it. BUT, it's expensive to live here and has stupid laws.
