| My ferret will be 4 months on the 30th of this month and he has had quite an experience so far. We let him out everyday for hours to run around, until a couple weeks ago I brought him out one morning and noticed him limping. I figured it was his nails, so I trimmed them, but it wasn't, so I took him to the vet. They xray'd him and his leg is broken, so they casted it. My poor little guy can't run around like he was, even thought he'd like to! He's a tough guy! We honestly didn't know it was even broken because he kept trying to run around and still chase the cats. Well, we are very upset, but my main question is this. I read a topic that ferrets need to come out of their cages often. Since his casting, he obviously can't run around, but I try to take him out each day and hold him, and pet him..I'll admit, it's kinda nice to have him fall asleep on me since they are so hyper! But I want the best for him. It has been about 2 weeks and we bring him in for his checkup soon. I just want to know if there are any play techniques that anyone can offer that won't involve any harm to his injury! He is getting squirmy now when I hold him and I can tell he is started to get stir crazy! Other than taking him out and holding him, I took him out other day so the cats and him could smell eachother lol... I just want to know if there is anything else anyone can think of. We want him to heal soon! But don't want to slow the healing process by letting him take charge lol.. Any advice is helpful. Thanks!

| Hi Jenny, So sorry to hear about your babies leg. What leg is broken? If it is a back leg I would suggest a toy on a string. You can hold him well letting him bat at the toy and pull it towards him. That will atleast give him some mental stimulation and ferrrets love to bat at and bite at objects on strings. LOL! I have tiny stuffed animals and jingle balls on strings suspended from the bottom of the kitchen table and from the handles on the cubourds. I'm sorry but I can't think of much for front leg. Best of luck! I hope he heals quickly. Keep us updated.[ ]

| Thanks for the response! yes it's his back leg. We are taking him back in a couple days for the vet to check his cast, but we just want to know how the healing process is actually going (since he didn't seem to show he was in pain from a broken bone) we can't tell lol. I did put some small toys in his cage though, but I think he is getting frustrated. He keeps knocking over his food and gripping his paws around our hands when we go to put him back in his cage. I feel horrible! I have been taking him out everyday just so he doesn't get a cage complex (I read how that is very bad for an animal) so I'll pet him and hold him, but then he eventually wants to go wild like usual. I will try tying something to the top of his cage though, that is actually a really good idea. Thanks again!

How is your ferret doing? I'm so sorry that I didn't get back sooner. I've been so busy lately. Have you tried holding him and playing with a toy in you hands. I sure hope he likes the toys on strings.[ ] I'll be on regularly again. Let me know how he is. I'm sure he's doing great.

| Hi! Sorry to hear of your little boy's broken leg...if you can put him in a room with a door and keep him in a smaller space, at least he can run around a bit. With the cast, I think he is going to be okay if you let him play. He is not going to be as mobile with the cast and giving him some play time is important like you say...play pens don't really work, we had one that my ferrets climbed out of... If you put boxes with holes cut in them and old blankets...that will keep him from running too much and he can burrow and have fun. Good luck!

I agree with limiting the space for playtime. Also restrict or keenly watch the cat during playtime. Due to the injury the kitty might think of it as an easy prey. Boxes where the holes are easy to get into to burrow and bury oneself is a good idea. You can use fleece, rice or even those plastic Easter eggs. Re-arrange some of the toys to prevent boredom is also good. Also make sure you follow the vet's advice on how to keep the little one from injury the leg again.

Hi there, sorry I have not been around for awhile. My boy is doing a lot better. He made a full recovery. The vet showed me the xrays. He's running around more than ever although we do limit the areas to where he is able to climb. It's amazing how his behavior can change, over the past month or so we let him out and when he's done running around he puts himself to bed! Such interesting animals
Thank you all for your replies however. I appreciate it!
