OK, so I have just taken on a beautiful 2 year old male ferret. I've only had him a few days. He is adorable and very big. He is un-castrated and litter trained if any one can help me with a few things I'd really appreciate it.

1) He smells!
And I just don't mean bearable mustelid aroma I mean sickening stench! My other half is not impressed he lives in a big cage in the kitchen at the moment and comes out to run around. As he is running he seems to wee on everything and I can't tell if its trails of urine or if he is scenting/ spraying.he slightly lifts his tail and then slides off the edges of things leaving a very very strong yellow stain! He is being castrated on Wednesday and I'm seriously hoping that it will calm down. He did not smell this bad at the house we collected him from and I'm not sure if thats because the owners were heavy smokers and we couldn't smell anything but smoke in their house. Or because he is new here and he is busy marking his new territory! I have seen videos on You Tube of people playing with their ferrets on their beds! There is no way on earth I’d let Buddy go on my bed I’d never be able to sleep in it again because of the smell! What ever happens though if the smell does not lessens to bearable my other half will make me rehome him!

2) Am I going to get savaged?
Worry No 2...he is crazy! When he comes out to play he goes into crazy ferret turbo mode and bounces around biting and shaking any trouser legs in sight. In between the serious craziness you can role him upside down and rub his tummy and he never bites ever. I’m just not sure that when he is very crazy if I should engage in ruffling him with my hands he bounces forward and back and somersaulting chuckling wanting to play but I have seen his teeth and I’m slightly nervous that letting him use his teeth to hold my hand when he is that crazy is a good idea..how can I test a safe level without a serious potential bite?...I know I should just stop being a girls blouse and brave it but he does go completely nuts!

3) Climbing up me….
The other things is he constantly wants to climb up me, over and over he goes to my trouser leg and trys to pull himself all the way up to my head, I can’t get on with jobs in the kitchen because he is incessant about doing this! Can I stop him?!

4) does he need another ferret ...when he has been castrated!
I’m hoping he isn’t too lonely without other ferrets to play with but he came by himself because the lady could not keep him with her female as he was too rough and just too damn big. When he has been castrated in a few days and then left for a few months to loose the testosterone should I get him a playmate?

Overall he is delightful and hysterically funny and I want to give him the best loving home possible, but I’m not sure that given his huge size and very boisterous overtly stinkyness he is going to be my other halfs favourite pet and he may have be re-homed again if IO can’t calm things down a bit!

Oh boy, for starters, limit your ferret's playing area and teach him how to use the litter box. It will take time for  him to figure out where he is to do his business in. It is also normal for a ferret to drag there bottoms after doing their business. You can use some of his poop from the cage or if you pick up off the floor and put in the litter box to mark it as his box.

As he is a full male, he will also have his scent glands still intact as well. Altering the male is the easy part, as far as the scent glands check with the vet about having those removed, as he will puff when he gets excited.

Spring time is normally mating season, and it is possible that his little dancing is one of two things. I want a female or he is very happy to play. Ferrets love to play, they will flip, roll, jump, run up pant legs, make all sorts of noise while having fun. This sounds like typical playtime activities and he is inviting you to play with him. Rolling him on his tummy to rub and it sounds like he loves that, try taking a towel and drag the towel on the floor for magic carpet rides. Get some balls with bells to roll on the floor for him to chase. Plastic colored eggs in a box to dig in. Put down old jeans for him to crawl in.

As for a second ferret, just watch him after his surgery for a bit. As he will still think he is a full male and can be very aggressive towards any new ferret.

Get the book "Ferrets for Dummies" excellent for ferret owners. Provides a wealth of information on how to care for these little guys.

Food make sure you are feeding him ferret food with a protein level of 36% or more. Avoid ferret food that contains corn, corn meal, fruits and vegetables. Ferrets are carnivores and eat meat. There are several people who will feed their ferrets fresh chicken and pinkies for treats. That is a choice for you to make. I feed my group cooked chicken, as they will hide the chicken and that can be a mess. Other treats would include Nbones, Bandits, Chicken Jerky, kibble from the hand, or other ferret treats.

You can shop on line at several different stores to find these items, and sometimes they are cheaper than what they are at like a Petco or a Petsmart.

Hope this helps
