I'm thinking about getting a ferret and I was wondering if ferrets get along with other animals like birds, dogs, cats and rabbits because I own a rabbit, a dog, a cat and a bird.

Your ferret would be the predatory animal and your bird would be the prey, so you'll want to make sure that they are not out at the same time, and you may need to keep watch over your bird's area and keep your ferret out of it.

Here is a link to one of our rabbit articles that includes a section on Ferrets and Rabbits.

I'm sure some other ferret owners can help share their experiences with owning cats and dogs.

I dont have any other animals now but i did have dogs at one time. The germanshepard had a strong prey drive and could not be in the same area as the ferrets, the weimeraner liked the ferrets and always wanted to play with them. I did let him play a little but i was right there holding him, a 80 pound dog is no match for a ferret when the dog is hopping around. Some people i know have dogs and cats and they either love to play with the ferrets or they dont. Any time you let another animal interact with a ferret you must be right on top of them at all times.

As for any other animals snakes, Birds, mice, hamsters, rats, birds, or any other small critter it would be best to keep them in another room. I have heard of many horror storys involving other animals and ferrets. Even if all seems well as soon as you let your guard down instinct takes over.

I would not get a ferret with that combination!!!! I tried a ferret with my poor guinea pig once and that ferret had a high predator drive. He would not leave my guinea pig alone.

No animal is a throw away!!!!!

I have three dogs and I hold my ferret Scout and let the dogs come up to her, but I keep them at bay and somewhat at a distance.  I don't let them come right up to her and get in her face and they mind really well, so I make sure they are always calm if I let them come around her.  Scout is only eight weeks old so they are all still getting acclimated to one another.  I also let them come to her cage and say hi, but only when the cage is securely locked and I'm there at the cage with them.  I have two small chihuahuas and a small terrier, therefore Scout has a big room all to herself where the dogs can't get in and she can't get out for her safety.  She stays in her "cage home" when I'm at work and I always keep the door to the room closed.  When she comes to others areas of the house, the dogs go outdoors for play.  I never leave Scout alone.  I just won't take a chance.   My son has a ball python in his room.  Her home sets up atop his entertainment center and is securely locked and believe me...I'm always checking to make sure that cage is secure.  When he gets her out, he is always holding her and stays in his room.  Whatever you do, just remember that instincts will usually always take over, so you have to take very special care that your ferret is safe and your others animals are too.

I have 6 ferrets and to older cats, they get along fine, tho my oldest is alittle jelous of them at times. now not all cats will get along with ferrets, mine i had to watch the babies, because of there size,my one cat kept stalking them like they were mice. she finally realized they were ferrets and left them alone. now tho she doesn't bother babies at all.

Anything larger than your ferret may cause harm/death to your ferret and anything smaller may be harmed/killed by your ferret.  Always monitor different species when they are together no matter how long they have gotten along.  Refer to the story about Ping is He in ferretsmagazine.  He was killed by the family dog.  They had lived together for some time.
