Okay, so i've had my one ferret, Ash for about 4 months now. he is still under a year old. He's very playful with us, sometimes biting, but he gets under control easily. He gets really lonely and bored alot, so we decided to get another ferret. We've had him for about 2 weeks and a few days.

Lucien is significantly smaller than Ash but they are around the same age according to the breeder. We have quarantined them, then put their cages next to eachother and Ash hisses at Lucien alot. and i'm not sure what that means. but then Ash will lay next to Lucien's cage and play through the bars.

Also, when i have them out to play Ash is VERY nasty to Lucien holding onto him and not letting go and i get SO worried, we cant have them in the same cage yet. Lucien is completely content and all he wants to do is play.

But, Ash seems very angry and very physical with Lucien.

How do i go about putting them together?
When will I be able to put them in the same cage together?

I'm patient but, somethign about me is so afraid!

Thanks! and i hope i get the help i need!

Hi and congrats on the new baby. what may look like rough play to us is normal for ferrets, ferrets play extremely rough with each other and some even make noises like screaming and clucking when doing it. There is a saying in the ferret world "No blood No poop all is well"  What that means as long as no one is drawing blood or pooping wile rough housing then all is good. Ferrets have a pecking order and until they sort out who is the dominate one the playing could be very rough, they usually work it out by themselves. I would just keep and eye out for blood and poop and if one of them does do it separate them immediately other wise just let them work it out.  As far as the intros go i would let them play for short periods of time then increase the time they are together every day. If they sleep together when out playing then they are comfortable with each other and then could be housed together.

Thank you so much for the information! VERY helpful. We have tried everything you told us and it is working fairly well so far. although as new ferret owners, we still get a little anxious when we do hear the noises. but, we check them every 10-15 minutes for wounds ...so far none! and we've been very happy!

Only problem is..everything is fine when they are out of their cage...When i try to put the baby in Ash's cage (with his own hammock) Lucien will try to sleep or lay with Ash- Ash hisses away and doesnt like it one bit.

Any suggestions with that?

-Jazmyn

thanks again!

Some ferrets it will take a wile for them to be accepted in close quarters of a cage. Try to put some freshly cleaned bedding in the cage and see how it goes, a rule of thumb 2 pieces of bedding in the cage per ferret. How big is the cage they are using? there might not be enough room for Ash she may need more room to feel comfortable. Keep us posted.
