| I am new to this group, but thought I’d share a special moment I hope many of you have had as well, or will in the future. I recently had a bonding experience with my step daughter and a spell of déjà vu all in one. She had wanted a hamster for a few years and as a reward for doing well in school, I decided the time was right. It had been many years since I had one, as I was about 12 (her age) when my parents bestowed upon me the privilege and responsibility of taking care of this kind of animal. When picking one out, she decided on a Syrian hamster she named Cinnamon. After coming home and putting her cage together, it was definitely one of the most nostalgic experiences I think I’ve ever had. The squeak of the little metal exercise wheel, the smell of the food and sawdust, and the sound it made when her little hammy would drink water from the bottle were all brought back after being buried in my subconscious for a long time. It was sort of like taking her to the same miniature golf course I went to as a kid and both of us ordering cherry ICEEs…another experience that sort of got lost in the fold of adulthood. I think that is one of the best parts of giving your kids the rite of passage of taking care of this little animal. Not only do you get to relive those memories, but you also have the opportunity to teach them the early stages of parenting.
